DEFEAT AVENGED

RICHMOND 3ACKS IN FORM Richmond avenged its defeat in the Roope Rooster by beating Newton after the latter looked a winning team. The Richmond backs on this occasion played better combined football and some of its movements were speedily carried out. Newton started well and added seven points before Richmond scored. The first try was a good effort. The Newton forwards trailed the backs in a strong offensive, Quirke. Johnstone end Middleton doing good work in support of Pope, who dashed through the centre. Brady kicked a great goal from 40 yards out. Richmond did better as the game progressed. Its backs passed well ana speed played a big part in three good tries before half-time. On resuming Newton was handicapped with Brimble badly limping, and the halfback was of little use to his team. The Richmond backs quickly settled down to play good football and Powell made a nice opening, four backs handling for Mitchell to score. Newton made a great effort to regain the advantage and its forwards played with plenty of dash in the loose. Several strong attacks broke down at critical stages. The Newton backs kicked too much and the wings failed to finish off effective thrusts by the five-eighths. The Richmond backs did all the. attacking in the last fifteen minutes. The Richmond forwards also played belter in the second half, when game was made more open. In the scrums Newton held the advantage. Marshall, at fullback for Richmond, did not improve on his moderate display the previous week and again was very uncertain in his play. Mincham was the outstanding back and made some beautiful openings at centre-threcquarters. His speed made good opportunities for Mitchell, who played a splendid game on the wing. McNeil was also prominent, although he did not get the same opportunities as Mitchell. The Richmond five-eighths, Prentice and J. Satherley, were a little slow on attack, but did useful work on defence. Powell played well behind the pack, particularly in the second half. Lawless was the best of the Richmond forwards, and Telford and Broadhead played good games. Williams and Metcalfe were also prominent. For Newton, Kerr played a sound game at fullback and repeatedly saved his team with splendid fielding. On the wing, Brady showed a lot of dash, but should drop the habit of charging with his head down. Franich played an improved game at fiveeighths and made several nice runs, although he held on too long. Pope was prominent on occasions, as was Young at five-eighths, whose defence could be improved. Quirke was perhaps the best of the forwards and his hooking ability must have impressed the Auckland selectors. Johnstone and Clemm played good games. The latter played well on the wing late in the second half. For Richmond, Mitchell scored four tries and Williams and Mincham one each. Minchim converted three tries and kicked one penalty goal. For Newton. Middleton, Brady and Lunn scored tries. Brady kicked two penalty goals and converted one try. Mr. M. Wetherill was referee.
