MAORI CHIEF'S DEATH
MANY YEARS AT WAIHEKE A leading chief of the Ngati-Paoa tribe. Unukaraka te Wareo, died at Surfdale, Waiheke Island, on Thursday, aged 77. Born at Miranda, he was a son of Te Kupenga te Waero, chief of that place. He went to live at AVaiheko as a young man of 22, making his homo at Surfdale, whore he spent the remainder of his life. He was a recognised leader of the Waiheke Maoris, and was much respected by the Kuropean community on tho island. Unukaraka te Waero is survived by his wife, two sons and four daughters. There are 20 grandchildren. A large gathering of Maoris assembled at Surfdale at tho week-end for the interment in tho Maori cemetery at Blackpool Bay.
