WEST COAST BEATEN
AUCKLAND TOURING TEAM L. BROWN'S FOUR TRIES [by telegraph—own correspondent] GREYMOUTH. Wednesday Before an attendance of 2000 the Auckland touring League team defeated West Coast by 32 points to 14, displaying superior fitness, speed and combination. The game was played in fine weather, although a strong wind made conditions trying for the players. The Coast forwards were definitely superior, but could not cope with the speed of the opposing backs, particularly the winger, Lou Brown, who made the majority of the openings. The first 20 minutes were even, and then Auckland initiated a passing rush, the ball travelling out to Brown, who raced from halfway to score. Satherley converted. The next try, also by Brown, came from a similar movement, and Satherley converted. Just on half-time the Coast forwards, following a high penalty kick, _ allowed G. Scott to gain poesession and dive over. P. Scott failed to convert. Half-time score: Auckland, 10; West Coast, 8. Playing with the wind, Coast scored early when Williams, following a loose rush, beat tho opponents and scored in the corner. Scott's kick was unsuccessful. Kay made an opening from which Tetley sent Herring over. Satherley failed with kick. Cooke, [ who came up from fullback to centre in the second half, earned the next try, breaking through from half-way to send Riley in under the posts. Satherley converted. Auckland's next try was the result of a brilliant run by 81-own from his own goal line, Riley again finishing off the movement. Satherley's kick failed. Riley, Cooke and Brown figured in the next movement, from which the latter scored. Fletcher failed with tho kick. Although down 24—6, Coast territorially held their own, and were rewarded when O'Connor cut through from a scrum to send Doddß over. Scott failed to convert. Cooke and Brown again broke thiough the defence, Brown scoring his fourth try Fletcher again failed with the kick. Immediately after, a brilliant passing rush by Brown, Riley and Hall resulted in the latter scoring under the poßts, Fletcher converting. Just before time the Coast forwards made a determined rally, and O'Connor scored near the sideline, the conversion making tho final score;— Auckland, 32; West Coast, 14.
