RATEPAYERS AND WORK

ACTION OF COMMITTEE DISAGREEMENT AT PAPAKURA At a meeting of the Papakura Town Board on Monday night a motion was passed differing from the action of tho Works Committee in employing ratepayers on certain works to enable thorn to pay their rates Mr. G. W. lierr said that at the previous meeting authority had been given to the Works Committee to employ some additional men to carry on certain work. He had discovered, however, that thero was reason to believe that tho committee had put on men to work off their rates. That was a scheme that had been rejected by tho board.

Mr D Weir, chairman of the Works Committee, said that some of the men employed had been ratepayers, but it was tlioir own affair if they paid their rates with their wages. The chairman of tho board, Mr. H E. McEntee, said that the board had decided against allowing ratepayers to do work in lieu of rates. Ho moved that tho board disapprove of the action of the committee. The motion was carried, Messrs. Weir and Bartells voting against it.
