FIRE BOARD MEMBERS
WHAKATANE COMPLAINT [BY TELEGRAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] WHAKATANE, Monday Representation upon the Bay of Plenty Power Board was referred to by Mr. J. W. Sumner at a meeting of the board. He quoted figures which he contended showed that the proportion of live members for Opotiki and only three for Whakatane was not in keeping with the spirit of the Act governing such local authorities. The valuation of the Whakatane district, ho said, was nearly double that of Opotiki, while the Whakatane County contributed £IBOO more revenue and had a population 1300 greater than Opotiki. He considered that Whakatane was justified in asking why this anomalous position was not rectified before the last election.. Even now no indication had been given of a desire or intention to remedy the matter. The chairman replied to Mr. Sumner's protest by stating that Whakatane fiad always been treated fairly.
