VICTORIA LEAGUE

BIRTHDAY OF PRESIDENT TEA AND PRESENTATION There was a large gathering of members of the Victoria League in Milne ami C'hoyee's Reception Hall yesterday afternoon to do honour to their president, .Miss J. Mowbray, on the occasion of her birthday. With bowls of arum lilies and other spring (lowers the hall looked most attractive, and later the table at the further end added still more colour with all the lovely flowers that were presented to Miss Mowbray, spread upon it. Mrs. J. B. Macfarlane, chairman of the Ever-ready Committee, and Mrs. L. S. Rickerby, secretary, received the members and Mr. Townley Little presided at the gathering.

In welcoming the guest of honour Mr. Little said Miss Mowbray had most worthily upheld the traditions of a league that had been formed to 'perpetuate the memory of the. late Queen Victoria. In such a time as the present, when the Empire was beset within and without, an organisation like the league did much to stimulate pride in its ideals and achievements. Mr. Little further referred to the fact that Miss Mowbray's great aim, that of raising a sum of £IOOO through life members' subscriptions, had now been realised. After tea had been served, for which two sittings had been arranged, the presentation of a filled wallet was marie to Miss Mowbray by Mrs. A. Edger, a foundation member of the league, on behalf of the gathering. Tn handing Miss Mowbray the gift Mrs. Edger spoke of Miss Mowbray's outstanding work for the league and her untiring enthusiasm in its service.

In thanking members for their gift and good wishes Miss Mowbray spoke of the great interest which the work for the league had given her and which had added to her enjoyment of life. She also referred with much appreciation to the work of Miss Nation for the league. Miss Statham also spoke and the ceremony ended with the singing of "For She's a .lollv Good Fellow."

An excellent programme of vocal, instrumental and dance items had been arranged by Miss Mavis MeCulloch. Contributing with a chorus "Singing a Happy Song," were Misses Ella and Mizpah Hutchinson, Joy Bishop, Helen Fraser, W. Tippetts, Edna and Molly Lincoln, Althea Morley, Norma Bain, Dorothy Ross and Margaret Parkinson. Miss Berta C'arr sang "Chanson de l'Adieu" (Tost.i) and "Lullaby" (Cyril Scott); Miss Irene Isaacs danced an original and graceful "Happy Pierrot" solo; Mrs. Harold Owers sang "Oh, That it Were So," and "The Fairy Tales of Ireland," and a fantasy, "At the Sign of the Cleft Heart," was presented by Misses Roseanne Lovell and Louise Jourdain. Pianoforte selections were played by Miss Doris Binns. The accompanists were Mrs. Charles Prime, Mrs. Brassey and M iss C. Brook. Members of the executive committee who were responsible for the arrangements on behalf of the league members, were:—Mrs. J. B. Macfarlane, Mrs. Rickerby, Mrs. A. Edger, Mrs. C. Keeble, Miss Fenton and Mr. Townley Little.
