RESTORATION OF CUTS
Sir, —Jt is predicted in the Parliamentary news of Monday's Hkrald that the Budget will probably include a further 5 per cent restoration of salary cuts. Also, there is a misleading inference that all excopt 10 per cent of the "cuts" has already been restored. The latter is incorrect, and i trust you will allow mo a little space to correct it. In 1931 all civil servants' salaries were reduced a full 10 per cent. Twelve months later a further reduction was made of 5 per cent on salaries up to £225, 10 per cent on salaries above that figure and 12i per cent on those above £720 per annum. The majority of civil servants, therefore, received "cuts" which reduced their incomes by at least 20 per cewt. From all parts of the Dominion we hear of local bodies and business firms restoring, in most cases in full, the salary cuts made during the depression. Have we not every right to expect that we shall receive the same just treatment? S. Mather. Hon. secretary, Combined Civil Service Committee.
