OBSCENE LETTER SENT
MAN GRANTED PROBATION "OBSESSED BY GRIEVANCE" [f:rom ouk own* correspondent! HAMILTON, Monday " This man has a real or fancied grievance which has become an obsession to him," said Mr. H. Tompkins, in pleading for leniency for Leopold Hodgins, who admitted having sent an indecent publication through the post. Detective-Sergeant J. Thompson, who prosecuted, said that defendant had owned a farm at Horsham Downs. He was dispossessed of the property by tho State Advances Department last year, and a local settler, Thomas Henderson, became the owner. Since then Henderson had been subject to considerable annoyance from Hodgins, who had written letters to him, one of which was couched in indecent language. Mr. Tompkins said that Henderson paid Hodgins £ls for some hay, Hodgins considered the payment was too small, and he -became obsessed with the idea that he had not been fairly treated. Defendant was convicted and was placed on probation for two years.
