ACTIVITY OF THIEVES

RAIDS IN GLEN EDEN GROCERY STORE VISITED STOCK AND MONEY TAKEN Thieves were active in Glen Eden on Tuesday night or early yesterday morning, and two premises about a quarter of a mile sfpart on the West Coast Road, were entered. From the grocery store of Heald and Son. goods worth over £2O and about £3 in money were taken, while a petrol pump was broken open at the garage of Mr. R, Rosier and 12 gallons of petrol stolen. Both thefts were discovered when the owners opened their premises for business yesterday morning. At the grocery store the thieves were unsuccessful in an attempt to force open a sliding door at the back of the building, but they managed to lift the door from its runners. The contents of the till, about £3 worth of silver, were taken, and an assortment of goods was missing from the shelves. The thieves helped themselres liberally to tobacco, cigarettes, cheese, ham, biscuits, sweets, rice and tinned goods, and also stole a kettle. The goods were carried away in a box, from which a quantity of rice was emptied. Two locks were smashed by the intruders before they were able to take petrol from the pump at Jlr. Rosier'* place of business. No attempt was made to break into the garage. The police the* discovered that an explosive had been used in an attempt by the burglars to -open the door, as seven of the eight bolts in the lock had been completely bolwn to pieces. Tho remaining one had prevented entrance to the strongroom. It is presumed that the explosion set fire to the mattress which was used to muffle the sound.
