ASSOCIATION GAME

COLLEGE TOURNAMENT NORTH ISLAND COMPETITION FAST CONTESTS WITNESSED Although a. strong wind hampered the players in their eflorts to control the ball, the first series of games in tho North Island secondary schools' Soccer tournament, decided at Victoria Park yesterday afternoon, provided a good attendance of parents and friends with attractive exhibitions of fast and scientific football. One senior match was played, tho Auckland representatives getting the better of Manawatu in a hard game by six goals to three, while in the junior games Wanganui defeated Manawatu by four goals to one and Hawke's Bay beat Wellington by three goals to nil. The tournament will bo continued today, when five games will be decided, the first of which will commence at 10 o'clock. SCIENTIFIC PLAY AUCKLAND DEFEATS MANAWATU The Auckland senior representatives gave a scientific display iti defeating Manawutu by six goals to three, fine combination being; a feature of their play. Although Mariuwatu asserted itscli just after the commencement of the second spell and appeared to have a chance of upsetting its opponents by vigorous methods, the Auckland team held a fairly safe grip on the exchanges for tht greater paif of the time. With a particularly strong half-line incorporating Christie, Bowmer and Wood, Auckland was permi led to dominate the midfield exchanges. Bowmer was outstanding in the first half foi solid defence and studied attacking play McDonald showed force in tho centre for Auckland, and he had two clever supports in Haydon and McLachlan. On tho right wing, Garlick was dangerous with soverul accurate shpts and well-placed crosses The Auckland fullbacks, Mansfield and Mead were somewhat awkward in their movements, and did not show up in a strong light when bustled. A brighi display was given by R. Collins in the Manawatu goal. He showed courage on several occasions in running out to meet the attackers, while his handling was clean Strong kicking by Telford helped his side, and Hooker the ccntrehalf, was an earnest worker throughout. With more support, the latter would have made Auckland's task more difficult Tl.e Manawatu halves showed a tondency to fall back too far. this giving the Aucklanders plenty of scope for move ment Stewart led the vanguard in aggres. sive style, while Moore and Nicholls forged ahead when given a chance. Goals were scored for Auckland by McDonald (3), Haydon (2). and McLachlan, while Stewart (2), and Nicholls scored for tho losers.

JUNIOR MATCHES Thoroughly interesting football was witnessed ii. the junior games. Hawke's Bay revealed good form in disposing of ton by three goals to nil. Playing with the wind in the rirst half, Hawke's Bay dominated the exchanges und established a tell ing lead. Retaliation by Wellington in the second half had Mie opposing defences work, ing hard, but the Hawke's Bay backs played with judgment and kept the attackers from scoring. Tringhajn, Carroll and Stack played attractive games for the winners. while Johnson and Leadbenter were- the best of the Wellingtoi side. Tringham scored two goals for Hawke's Bay, and the remaining goal was securer 1 when the ball rebounded off a Wellington defender. Unfortunate in that its goalkeeper had an off day an<l permitted three very easy shots to'pass, . Manawatu lost the decision to Wanganui by four goal? to one. Both teams played ar, open type of football, with Wanganui showing a slight superiority in mid field tactics nnd combination Against the wind in thr first half, Wanganui took the lead and managed to retain a safe margin throughout. O'Keefe. Fowler, Sharpe and ,Tf-rom«on played well for Wanganui. while Carter was in fine form on the left-wing 1 Hearsey. or the right wing for Manawatu. revealed pa<e and footwork, while Bradley, Hunl and Collins also wero prominent , for ronsjsten l play Jeromson (2) and O'Keefe (2), scored foi Wanganui, while Peterson secured Manawatu's goal. * -
