WHAKATANE FUNCTIONS

; An enjoyable social evening for mem- | bers of the Knox choir, Whakatane, was held at Mr. W. McFarland's residence at Thornton. A pleasing feature of the evening was the presentation of a crystal bowl and bouquet to Mrs. H. Garaway, as an appreciation of her services in the choir. Supper was served and a birthday cake took the place of honour on the supper table. Mrs. Josephs was the hostess. The Whakatane branch of the League of' Mothers held its first monthly meeting of the new year in the Presbyterian Hall. Mrs. Hyland gave the thought for the month. The president, Mrs. Buddie, read an address by the Lady Alice Fergusson on the aims and objects of the league, and Mrs. S. Miller sang three delightful songs, "Oh, Happy Bird," "My Heart Awakes" and "Happy Summer's Song." The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Sullivan, Cutler and A. Bridger. In the Waiotahi Hall on Friday evening the Waiotahi Women's Institute held its sixth birthday celebrations. The evening took the form of a social and dance and was open to friends and sister institutes. The floor was thronged with dancers from all parts of the district and representatives from many other institutes. Dance music was supplied by a good orchestra, and Mrs. Burke played the "extras. Vocal items by Mrs. Burke and Mrs. White (Cheddon Valley), Miss White and Miss Du Pontet (Waiotahi) were much appreciated. The birthday cake, iced in the institute's colours, was cut by Mrs. L. Looney. Supper was served by members of the committee.

The monthly meeting of the Otakiri Women's Institute was held recently in the Otakiri Hall. A report was read by Mrs. Cobden, delegate to the Dominion Federation conference, of the work carried out at the meeting. Miss D. Young, a visitor, gave a demonstration of Fair Isle knitting. Mrs. Cobden won the prize for tlio best butter sponge cake, while the prize for the best flower in the garden was won by Mrs. Tickner. The roll call, "Sing, say or a penny pay," brought forth a few gems of poetry, and also a few pence.
