MAORI CENSUS
TALLY AT OttAKEI. POPULATION OF VILLAGE * ISLANDERS AND HALF-CASTES A census of the native population of the Orakei Maori Village has just been taken by the city returning officer, Mr. P. F. Notley, which shows that the Polynesian occupants of the village number 74 adults and 48 children. In addition there are 13 European persons domiciled on the area, representing employees of the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board and their children. This tally is interesting in view of the proposals recently made for the establishment of a model Maori village on the site of the present settlement. The census reveals that there are 61 Maori adults and 30 Maori children living there; three Maori half-caste adults and 13 Maori half-caste children; 10 adult Islanders'and three Island children and two hqlf-casto Chinese children.
