GREAT SOUTH ROAD
TWO NEW BRIDGES WORK NEARING COMPLETION PROVIDING DUSTLESS HIGHWAY Two new bridges on the Great South Road—one over Slippery Creek, about half-a-mile north of Drury, and one at Pokeno —are Hearing completion. Very little construction work remains to be' done on the bridge near Drury, and tho approaches are now being formed. It is expected the structure will be available for traffic early next month. When the approaches have consolidated they will bo concreted. Good progress also is being made with the bridge at Pokeno, and it is practically completed. As soon as it is finished the sealing of the remaining unsealed 58 chains of the Great South Road in tho Franklin County will bo undertaken. This niece, which is at Pokeno, is expected to be ready before Christmas, by which time there will be a dustless highway from Auckland practically as far as Hamilton. The abnormal height of the Waikato River, owing to the exceptionally wet weather of recent months, has seriously handicapped the contractors for the new Fairfield Bridge, the Roose Shipping Company. The bridge is being erected across the river about one and a-half miles below the existing structure at Hamilton. Both abutments have been completed and the piers at either end have been put in. However, the coder dams round the pier excavations iri the middle of tho river have been covered with water, owing to tho unexpected height of tho river, and work has thus been impeded. _________
