GIFT FROM BOY SCOUTS MARKING -CHIEF'S RECOVERY TRIBUTE TO THE STAFF As an expression of thankfulness for the recovery, after a serious operation, of Mr. W. J. Holdsworth, who is Metropolitan Commissioner of Boy Scouts, and also as a mark of gratitude to the members of the Auckland Hospital staff who attended Mr. Holdsworth during his illness, 2900 Boy Scouts in the Auckland Province recently subscribed a penny each for tho purchase of a cot for the new solarium at the hospital. Mr. Holdsworth is still in hospital, and the cheque for the purchase of tho cot was formally handed to the hospital authorities yesterday afternoon, when a special gathering was held outside ward 14, in which Mr. Holdsworth is a patient. Mr. W. Wallace, chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board, and Dr. J. W. Craven, medical superintendent of the hospital, were present, and there was a large attendance of members of tho scout movement. In handing the ohequo to Mr. Holdsworth for presentation to tho authorities. Mr. J. R. Middleton, general secretary of the Bo.\ Scouts' Association, said the movement throughout the Dominion was thankful for Mr. Holdsworth's recovery, and grateful to the doctors, nurses and other members of the staff for the care and attention guen. "Please accept our best wishes for a speedy convalescence," added Mr. Middleton, "and our congratulations on the completion of seven years of loyal service and devoted leadership in the responsible position of Metropolitan Commissioner." A tribute to the work of the hospital staff was paid by Mi'. Holdsworth, who spoke through an open window from his bed. He said it had beet; his first experience of a hospital, nnd tho wonderful care and attention he had received had been a revelation. Replying, Mr. Wallace expressed deep appreciation of tho gift. In the past few months, criticism of the management of the hospital had been made from some quarters, and Mr. Holdsworth's praise was almost providential. His tribute to the work of the hospital would speak volumes to the public.
