NOTES ON THE FORM

ENGE WINS HANDICAP ARDMANNING'S TWO SECONDS GAY LAP BEATS SPRINTERS BY ARCHER After a long sequence of defeats, Zone Grey scored his first success when lie won the Greeninount Hunters' Steeplechase, for which he was fourth fancy in a field of five. Although he is eleven years old, Zane Grey has had actually only four seasons' racing, as he was turned out for several years after having about half a dozen starts as a two and three-.vear-old. It is a coincidence that he and Ardmanning, runner-up for the second year in succession, should have filled the minor places twelve months ago. The contest was robbed of considerable interest when Gascille and Parkhurst fell at the first fence on the hill in the second round. Gascille was going particularly well at the time, and it appeared as if he would have taken a good deal of beating. Cn the strength of his promising : form in Juno, King's Archer was ini stalled favourite for the Harris Memorial Hurdles and he duly won, although he had to be ridden right out at the end. King's Archer was piloted by L. Dulieu. who returned from Australia by the Mariposa only a few hours earlior in the morning. It was the winner's first victory over hurdles, but he should not be long in scoring again, especially when the ground becomes firmer, as he is not altogether partial to heavy going. Ruling King ran his usual solid race and Gampat tailed only in the straight. The others were all badly beaten, although Hawthorn went creditably until he fell at the five furlongs. Tea Chat displayed a lot of dash for about seven furlongs and then shirked hi 3 task, when ho was probably tiring. Oay Defence Wins The second fancy Gay Defence proved too good for the field in the Sylvia Park Handicap, and won easily at the finish after being prominent throughout the running. Like most of the progeny of Gay Shield, the winner has a fine j turn of speed and the patient policy that has been adopted with him now looks like being well rewarded. So far he has had only four starts for two wins, a second and a third, and he is an improver who should not be long in gaining further success. Hunting Maid and Valmint both finished well to fill the minor places, the former coming from near the rear of the field. Sho paid a fine price for second. Landlubber had every chance and failed to go on at the end. The favourite Salesman was handily placed on the outside approaching the turn, but failed to stay on Red Flame displayed early speed, and Air Lassie made a creditable showing. She should be improved by the run. The favourite Lord Val missed a place in the Jellicoe Handicap, which the second fancy Knge won from end to end.- Pulling hard in the early stages, Rnge was five lengths in front after doing three furlongs, and he never looked like being beaten, although several of the field ran up fairly close to him entering the straight. Rnge has been making steadv improvement, and he is a useful customer who should pay his way well this season. Knight of Australia again had to be content with a minor placing, and he seems fated not to win. The top-weight Kiitowyn made a fine showing, his class assisting him even though, he is not vt»t thorouphlv wound lin. Lord Val and Bmoncotic had every chance and were well beaten. So also were Master Norval and Delrain. Pine Steeples Finish The favourite Prosv Bov scored his third successive victorv when he won the Pakuranga Hunt Cup after a hard finish with Ardmanning. They were 'ocked together for practically the last three furlongs, and the winner just stayed the better. Prosv Boy is a good type of gelding, bred on sound jumping lines and he should be capable of winning in better company next winter. Ardmanning ran his usual honest race for another second, but the others all failed badly Zane Grey appeared to be assured of third position when he hit verv hard and lost his rider at tho second to last fence, but it is doubtful whether he would have troubled either of the first and second horses. Sandy Dix and Illuminagh did not get far, and Miss Pango did not annear to have any chance when she fell. The first and second horses, Silver Brier and Jewelled Girdle, came right away from the moderate field they met in the Auckland Handicap, and the former scored very decisively. Silver Brier won only once last season, hut she is becoming more solid and should not.be without prospects of more success at the spring meetings. Jewelled Girdle appeared to be travelling particularly ■well when he entered the straight, but he failed to finish with any real dash, although he was too good for those behind him Wee Pat was near tho rear for over half the journey, and then stayed on solidly at the end for third. The form of the others was not impressive, although Te Broney shaped encouragingly for a novice, and should do better with a little experience. Galnsay's Victory

Ridden by his owner, Mr. K. M p K. Duncan, the favourite Gainsay justified the confidence of his supporters by winning the Ladies' Bracelet in good style. Gainsay was always in or near the front, and he ran on splendidly when the pressure was npplied at the end He is a fine type of gelding to mak» a jumper, and. when given an opportunity over fences, ho may prove decidedly useful [lluminagh went well and paid a fine price for second, the best of the day. JVfarching Song and Gigantic made creditable showings, but the form of the others was moderate. Adsum was pulled up after going about two furlongs. Jumping out smartly from No. 1 position, Gav Lap led all the wav to win the Dunedin Handicap Owinc to unsoundness the winner has not done a great deal of racing in the past two seasons, but he is a very smart sprinter when at his best He was in his element in the heavv going, and when challenged in the straight by Tybalt ran on splendidly Tybalt went a fine race and Tmamint made a very creditable showing. Greek Gold, who was last in the cailv stapes, was battling on at the finish, but the others were well beaten Crooning displayed speed, but failed to go on at the end. PRINCIPAL BOY'S END The jumper Principal Boy received a hroken back when he fell in the Harris Memorial Hurdles at FJlerslie on Saturday and was destroyed Principal Boy was an aged gelding by Day Comet from Principal Lady, owned by Mr. S. McMilland, and trained by J. B. Smith at Te Rapa. INVERCARGILL JOCKEY HURT [BY TEI/KGRAPTI —OWN CORRESPOVDP.VrI INVERCARGILL. Snturday The Invercargill light-weight horseman G. Barclay was thrown from a young horse duriug tho week and broke a collarbone.
