TRIBUTE TO HEADMASTER FAREWELL FUNCTIONS HELD Appreciative references to the work of Mr. C. M. Littlejohn, first headmaster of the Takapuna Grammar School, who has been appointed to succeed Mr. H. J. D. Mahon as headmaster of the Auckland Grammar School, were made at a complimentary dinner held at the Hotel Mon Desir, Takapuna, on Saturday evening. The dinner, which was arranged by the executive and social committee of the Takapuna Grammar School Ex-pupils' Association, was also attended by former members of the association executive. Mr. R. G. Eade, vice-president of the association, presided at the wish of Mr. A. W. Short, president of the association and first assistant master at the Takapuna Grammar School, who desired an ex-pupil to occupy the chair for the function. The chairman said that he regarded the occasion with mixed feelings. He was glad Mr. Littlejohn was receiving well-merited promotion, and sorry that the Takapuna school was losing one who had been mainly responsible for the high standard it had attained. Short stated that during the eight and a-half years of Mr. Littlojohn's headmastership the rollnumbcr of tlie school had grown from 2-'io to over 500, and during that period no fewer than 1668 pupils had been in attendance at the school. The school had had a notable scholastic record. Within four >ears of its opening pupils had gained University Entrance Scholarships. This was an achievement uniquo in the history of the grammar schools in Auckland.

Speaking on behalf of the old girls of the school, Miss Joan Kay, joint secretary of the fix-Pupils' Association, referred to the admiration and respect with which Mr. Littlejohn was held by all. Mr. 1). W. Lochore, who spoke for the old boys, paid a tribute to Mr. Littlojohn's organising ability and to the fine example of service he had set. Mr. Littlejohn suitably replied.

Later in the evening the presentation of a silver tea-service to Mr. and Mrs. Littlejohn was made at a social nnd fiance held at St. Michael's Hall, Belmont. The function was attended by members of the Takapuna Grammar School staff and by a large number of former pupils. Mr. A. W. Short spoke and Miss Jean Kay formally made the presentation. Mr. Littlejohn thanked the ex-pupils for their gift and said that anything he had been able to do for them had qhvays been a pleasure.
