DOMINION HONEY

MARKETING IN BRITAIN INVESTIGATION COMPLETED ENGLISH VISITOR'S INTEREST After having spent the past four weeks in New Zealand investigating the honey industry with the object of ensuring the most effective marketing of the product in' England, Major J. Buckley, managing director of C. and E. Morton, Limited, of London, left by the Mariposa on Saturday 011 his return to Great Britain, via the United States. 'The firm with which Major Buckley is associated has handled the whole of New Zealand exports of honey to England and the Continent for several years. Following a discussion with the Prime Minister, Mr. Forbes, in London this year, Major Buckley decided to come to the Dominion to make a personal investigation of the position. New Zealand honcy v in his opinion, stands supreme over all others handled in England.

" I am very happy with the results I have achieved, and with the understanding I have reached with all elements of the industry," said Major Buckley on Saturday. " It now remains to make this arrangement effective." The nature of the arrangement Major Buckley said ho was not prepared to discuss, as it was still to be regarded as confidential. During his visit he had been in consultation with the' Government, the Honey Control Board and the Commission of Agriculture. He had also interviewed many beekeepers in the Waikato district. " L feel very sorry for the majority of these beekeepers, who are having an extremely hard struggle," ho added. Major Buckley said that as a result of his visit he had now to co-ordinate the information he had gained with an effective selling organisation in England. " In a few years' time I anticipate that the consumption of honey in England will be far in excess of the present tonnage," he said. Speaking generally of the primary industries in the Dominion, the visitor said he had noticed the same absence of scientific methods of bridging the gap between the producer and the consumer as existed in Canada, India, Australia and other countries. Instead of the representatives of producers or distributing firms going abroad and studying the position, there was a tendency to turn to the Government and ask for artificial means of keeping the other man's product out. " Quotas and tariffs," continued Major Buckley, " are artificial methods of effecting a remedy. Taking a long view, they can never be as effective as 'marrying' the productive and distributive sides of industry by the closest cooperation and a complete common-sense understanding of the difficulties attending the problem. This is the surest and the only straight road to prosperity.
