WHANGAREI ACTIVITIES
TEMPERANCE LEADER'S VISIT Mrs. Moffat Clow, of Belfast, Ireland, a member of the world executive of the Women's Christian Temperance Union, was the guest of the Whangarei branch of tho union last week. The Mayoress, Mrs. W. Jones, presided and extended a cordial welcome to Mrs. Clow on behalf of tho women of Wbangarei. Mrs. Clow gavo an address on tho activities of the movement in various parts of the world. In tho evening Mrs. Clow addressed a public meeting presided over by tho deputy-Mayor, Mr. G. H. Morrish. The question of tho prohibition of liquor, which was coming before the electors at noxt election, was dealt with by the speaker. Mrs. Clow reviewed what had transpired in other countries, including Germany and tho United States of America.
A successful concert and dance in aid of the funds of the Wbangarei Hospital Comforts Club was held at Purua on Thursday evening and resulted in the raising of about £lO. Items were contributed by Miss Mackay, Miss A Higginson, Miss N. O'Connor, Miss P. Wilson and Miss H. Eccles. A competition for a dressed doll wan won by Mrs. C. H. Finla.vson and for a doll s cradle by Miss .Julio lapper. Tho Whangaroi Rowing Club hold a verv successful dance in the Parochial Hall last week, when several novelty dances were held. Tho committee responsible for the function comprised Mrs. P. Gardner, Miss Gwen Halliday, Miss Gwen McCarroll and Miss A. Hirst.
