FASCISM ON TRIAL
Sir,—The failure of the Three Power Conference is well, since it was derogatory to Abyssinia and the League of Nations. Yet the prestige of Abyssinia and the League are enhanced by this apparent failure, since Signor Mussolini's lack of confidence in his case is demonstrated by his refusal to expose it to the shattering criticism he knows it would have received. Italians can hardly believe that their dictator has a master mind so long as he is afraid to meet his opponents in open debate before the tribunal of the world. We are told that the Italian press generally considers that a conference would be useless because it would result in a compromise, and that would be worse than a defeat. What evidence of warmadness! It is impossible to say that a compromise would be the outcome. And, if a compromise did result, it is impossible to say in advance what would be its nature. Hence, to say that a compromise would be worse than a defeat, not knowing the nature of either, is thoroughly irrational. Black Guard.
