HAIG'S WAR DIARIES
RETREAT ENDED AT LAST DECISION TO STRIKE BACK [Copyright to the Xf.w Zealand Herald] In to-day's instalment Mr. Duff Cooper reveals how Haig wished to support the French in their successful flank attack on the Germans at Guise. He was sharply rebuffed by Sir John French. The British commander-in-chief wished to quit the fighting line altogether, and the retreat went on. The British Cabinet was horrified at Sir John's decision and through Kitchener persuaded him to turn and fight, after his army had retreated far south of Paris.
