HIGHWAY DEVIATION
OPOTIKI COUNCIL'S ATTITUDE WHAKATANE COUNTY AFFAIRS [by TELEGRAPH OWN" cor respondent] WHAKATANE, Tuesday At to-day's meeting of Whakatane County Council a letter was received from the Opotiki County Council stating that it was not prepared to spend any money on the proposed deviation on the Wainui highway between Whakatane and Opotiki. The route of the proposed deviation is from Ohope Beach through part of the native development scheme on the .foast, then continuing round Ohiwa Harbour and joining up with the main highway near Kutarere, cutting out the present climb over the big hill on the Wainui route. Although the new route lies in the Opotiki County, the letter stated, the Opotiki County Council was quite agreeable that Whakatane County Council should proceed with the work. It was decided to forward the letter to the Wainui Settlers' Association for their information. Considerable discussion took place regarding the payment of relief workers on wet days, members considering that when a relief worker is unable to work on the first or second day of the week owing to rain he should turn up for work on the first fine day in the week, and not merely receive the money as a sustenance payment.
