RAROTONGA NEWS
VISIT BY MR. COATES COMMISSIONER'S WELCOME [from OtTR OWN" correspondent] RAROTOXGA, Aug. 12 The Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates and Mrs. Coates, who called at Rarotonga today on their journey to New Zealand, were met on board the R.M.S. Maunganui by the Resident Commissioner, Judge Ayson. The party, on landing, was received by members of the local branch of the Returned Soldiers' Association, the president, Captain J. D. Campbell, acting as spokesman. Official welcomes were accorded later at the Administration Building. The local Girl Guides paraded and were inspected by Mrs. Coates. A report is current that Judge Ayson may be appointed Administrator of Western Samoa. In such case it is suggested that Judge H. H. Carr, of the New Zealand Native Land Court, may succeed Judge Ayson as Resident Commissioner at Rarotonga. He acted as commissioner temporarily some years ago. A shipment of 17,000 cases of tomatoes is being despatched to Now Zealand by the Mrunganui. The price paid, 3s 6d a case, is disappointing to the growers. Mr. H. Sherman has been re-elected to the Rarotongan Island Council.
