SHIPWRIGHTS' DISPUTE

AGREEMENT NOT REACHED QUESTION OF HOURLY WAGE No agreement on the question of wages or overtime was reached at a conciliation council held yesterday between the Auckland Ship, Yacht and Boatbuilders' Union, and the employers. The dispute, which has been in progress since the end of July, centres principally on the flat-rate wage of 2s 2]d an hour demanded by the employees. The rates under the award which recently expired were 2s for shipwrights and is lid for boatbuilders. Mr. P. Hallv, conciliation commissioner, presided at the meeting yesterday. The employers' assessors were Captain R. C. Hammond and Messrs. J. N. Greenlapd and T. F. Lowe, Mr. W. E. Anderson, secretary of the Auckland Employers' Association, acting as advocate. The union representatives were Messrs. E. Shannon, W. Horn and M. McQuarrie, with Mr. H. Campbell, secretary of the union, as advocate. The proceedings were held in camera. It is stated that the employers' offer to refer the dispute to the Arbitration Court was again extended, but was rejected. As a result of the failure to reach an agreement, the position is the same as before, the-employees being not prepared to worlj, below the into of 2s an hour.
