Mrs. Nelson Meuli, who has been visiting Auckland, returned to Hawera last evening. Miss Beverley Horrocks, St. George's Bay Road, Parnell, is spending a holiday in Timaru.. Miss Shirley Smith, daughter of Mr. Justice Smith, left by the Ruahine on Saturday for London. Mrs. Boy Hume, of Dargaville, is the guest of her mother, Mrs. Howard, Takutai Street, Parnell. Mrs. G. Bitchie and Miss Elizabeth Ritchie, of Dtinedin, who have been visiting England, will arrive in Auckland this morning by the Niagara. Mrs. J. Black and Miss Nancye Hanna, of Hidings Road, Remuera, will leave to-morrow on a visit to Wa'nganui. Mrs. B. Kissen, of Clifton Road, Takapuna, has returned from a motor tour which included Wellington, the Chateau and Wairakei. Miss Naida Jarrett and Miss Mary Chadwick, of Whakatane, are visiting Auckland, whore they are the guests of Mrs. C. Watso.a-Harris, Mount Albert. Miss Jean Garroway, Auckland, is spending five weeks cn the Continent, and is at present in Vienna, having travelled via the Rhine and the Austrian Tyrol, writes our London correspondent on July 27. Mrs. M. E. Miller, Miss Zoe Miller, and Mr. and Mrs. E. Thompson, of Auckland, who have been for some months in London, have had many tours in England, Wales and Ireland. They will shortly visit Scotland, writes our London correspondent on July 27. The Y.W.C.A. Mothers' Club held a pleasant afternoon last week. Miss Knight gave a talk on Chopin and played one o!r his compositions, while Miss Hilda Collier nang and recited. The president of the club, Mrs. Hynes, presented Miss H. Collier with a salad bowl, and Miss Pankhurst with a fruit set. Both are shortly to be married. Tea was served by the hostesses. An address on the life and habits of | the Maori in the early days compared I with those of the Maori of to-day was given by Mrs. Bnbbineton at the monthly meeting of the Grey Lynn branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Mrs. Tasker-ljrown presided. A visiting member, Miss Reid, gave a humorous recitation, and members from the Ponsonby brancli were welcomed. > Miss Una Powell, who left on Saturday by the Raahine !:or England, is the Sir William Hartley scholar of Canterbury University College, Christchurch. She is proceeding; to Cambridge University to further her studies, her special subject , being mathematics. Miss Powell has had a brilliant career, having won this scholarship by gaining her M.A. degree with first-class honours in mathematics. Her father, the Rev. E. C. W. Powell, vicar of Sydenham, Christchurch, came to Auckland to see her off to England. A farewell tea a:id gathering was given at the Y.M.C.A. building last week to. Miss Joyce Hargreaves, of Mount Eden, who is paving shortly for Egypt, where she will be associated with the Egypt General Mission. Nearly 100 friends sat down to tea. The after-meel ing was presided over by Mr. H. Yclland, who voiced the high esteem in which Miss Hargreaves was held by a host of friends. He wished her good fortune on her journey to her new sphere of service as a missionary to the Moslem people of Egypt. \ Mrs. J. E. D. Spicer and her daughter, of Remuera, arrived in London at the beginning of this month, and went direct to Oxford to stay with the former's two brothers, Mr. King Adams and Mr. Gore Adams, writes our London correspondent on July 27. They spent a very pleasant ten days there, and were able to do a certain amount of sketching in addition to seeing many interesting places in the bounty. At the present time they are in Devonshire, staying near Totnes. Next month Mrs. and Miss Spicer will be in London a short time l>efore touring with Mr. Gore Adams through Wales and the English Lake District.
