DISMANTLING OF WHARF BOROUGH COUNCIL'S REQUEST [BT TELEGEAPH OWN" COHBESPO.VDENT] TAURANGA, Sunday At a meeting of the Tauranga Harbour Bos.rd, Mr. A. J. Mirrielces presided. The treasurer, Mr. C. Lowe, reported that the- net revenue, for the ten months ended July 31 totalled £2645, an increase of £424 compared with the corresponding period of the previous year. The chairman presented a report oil the Matakana Island plantation, which stated that the trees were making excellent. growth. Most of the firebreaks were overgrown. As the most suitable parts of the property had now all been planted sufficiently to comply with the requirements of the board's engineer, the chairman advised tha postponement of further expenditure in. this direction until 6uch time as it could be done out of profits. By that time the lupins should have become established in some of the difficult sandy areas. The chairman suggested that the board should obtain expert advice as to the advisability of thinning operations being undertaken. The board discussed the question of reducing the risk from fire in the plantations, and decided to ask the owners of the adjoining afforestation block to contribute half the cost of clearing a firebreak on the western boundary. A proposal by the chairman for the erection of a stone wall, with the view to considerably improving, the board's property along the Waikffiraao Estuary, was adopted. The chairman reported that the Port Waikato had sailed with a load of 430 tons of Putaruru stone, railed to Tauranga, which would-be utilised in the construction of the Dunedin Post Office. He understood that about 2400 tons of Putaruru stone would be shipped from Tauranga to Dunedin. The harbourmaster 1 presented a report dealing with the proposed dismantling of the town wharf. He considered that the portion on which three sheds stood should be dismantled, this area be ing 12,593 square feet. He suggested that the remaining portion of 6900 square feet be retained. A deputation from the Borough Council, headed by. the Mayor, Mr. L. R. Wilkinson, waited on the board and asked that before the wharf was dismantlad the board should confer with the council with the view to the retention of the structure in the interests of the town. It was suggested that the town wharf couli be utilised as a promenade. After the deputation withdrew the board appointed a committee to confer with a committee of the Borough Council in regard to both the town wharf and the septic tank outfall, and report to the> next meeting of the board.
