GOLDMINING TOWNS
INTERESTING REUNION Old scholars and residents of the goldmining towns of Karangahake and Mackaytown met for the first of their annual reunions on Saturday night. The function, which was held in the Tiffin dining rooms, Queen Street, was very well attended. Mr. W. J. Searlo presided. The roll was called by Mr. F. Oldham, the earliest headmaster of Karangahake School, respect being paid to "absent boys" who had lost their lives in the Great War. A toast to tho teachers was honoured and interesting anecdotes were told by those who spoke in response. Prior to tho war the two towns produced gold to the value of many thousands of pounds a month, but as tht> supply of gold decreased the population began to dwindle. At present, with the increase in gold prices, interest is once moro being shown, and it was partly this fact which prompted the committee to arrange tho reunion. The present committee with Mr. F. Nealie as secretary, was re-elected. Many interesting s,nd entertaining items were rendered and tho gathering broke up after it had been decided that another reunion be held at the same time next rear.
