STEEPLECHASE INCIDENT RIDER CAUGHT NAPPING MISHAP IN TROTTING RACE [BY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT] ' CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday Burglar was missing from the opening event, tho Hunt Cup Steeplechase, owing to lameness, and of the three starters Wykemist was made a warm favourite. He led for the first half-mile, but alter jumping the Konnels doublo Scotsden rushed to tho front and was well clear of Wykemist and Trait turning for home. However, Wykemist ran up to him when called upon and jumping the last fence in front went on to win easily. Trait, who had been kept a good way back throughout, finished strongly from the concluding obstacle and got to within a length of Scotsden. The four contestants for the Lawford Hunters' Steeplechase provided plenty of excitement. Aberfeldy went off with the lead, but struck the first of the Konnels double, the second obstacle on the journey, and his rider was dislodged, while Parasang was almost pulled up by boing interfered with by Aberfeldy. Dan Russell then carried on from Witui, with Parasang well back, and this order was maintained for a circuit. Witui then joined Dan Russell, who made a faulty jump approaching tho homo turn, and Witui streaked away to tho front. Stewards Issue Warning ! Witui was several lengths in front of Dan Russell facing tho last jump, with Parasang still a good way in tho rear. Witui dipped badly on landing and although his rider made a gamo effort to hold on ho lost his seat. Dan Russell was then left with the race apparently in his keeping but, owing to his rider failing; to realise the presence of Parasang, he allowed tljo latter to come from the roar to record an easy victory. Witui was remounted by R. Bealo and trotted homo for third money. An inquiry was held into tho riding of J. Kerr on Dan Russell. Kerr stated that his stirrup-leather had slipped out of the socket when he landed over the socond to last fence and he personally thought that whon Witui fell in front of him his mount was the only horse in the race. The stewards decided to issue a severe warning to Kerr regarding his riding. Tho contest for tho Aylesbury Trot was spoilt to a largo extent by several of tho largo field falling at the end of two furlongs. Buddy was then in charge and approaching th'e home turn, and also into the straight, was well clear of a strung-out field headed by Dollydora, Lady Hannah, Colonel Bogey and Navy Blue. Buddy commenced to tire inside the distance and Dcllydora broke under pressure, Colonel Bogey finishing on solidly to beat Buddy by a length. Lady Hannah gained tiiird money, three lengths away, in front of Navy Blue. The horses involved in the . fall were Minnietonka, Briga.dier, Lucess, True Reflection, Cam Dillon, Slipalong and Sardonyx. An Exciting Finish A largo field of 23 paraded for the Sehvyn Hack Handicap, and it close and exciting 1 tussle, resulted. When the course proper was ruached Hme Ka nau a slight advantage from Master Tony, but the distance Hine Ra was clear from Master Tony, with Disguise, Whaddon Chase, Grey Honour and Ladv Graceful in close attendance. Hine Ra 'stopped two chains from tho post and Glenavon showed out. with Lady Graceful following, and this pair drew away to fight out a hard finish, Glenavon holding off Lady Graceful to win bv a head. Disguiise was two lengths back, a length in front of the winner s stablemate, Grey Honour, who was followed by Bereft, Whaddon Chase, Trumpet Blast and Girl Guide. The Longbeach Hurdles was responsible for a most interesting race, and a good finish. Verden. took charge after two fences had bean crossed, and . he led to the hurdle a,t the six furlongs post, where he fell, Jolly Beggar then went to the front and was not afterwards headed. Polydora went up to him rounding the far turn, but hit a fence hard and narrowly missed a fall, bhe made up her lost ground on the flat and was only a length behind Jolly Beggsir at the last fence, with lanu, Hounalow, Red Sun and Lycidas next. Both leaders screwed slightly at the last fence, and once over Jolly Beggar had Polydora beaten. Red Sun then appeared on the scene with a effort over the concluding obstacle, hie was soon in second place, and finishing with a telling run he had Jolly Beggar fully extended to win by half a length. Polydora tired badly m the final stages, but held off Pahu by a length for third. Lycidas was well back next, and HounslOw, Radiant Rose and Aladdin followed at intervals. Impressive Performance The Brabazon Handicap produced a most impressive effort on the part of Wino, who was in the van from tho early stages and recorded a fairly comfortable win. The large field got away on good terms, the slowest to move being Giowlight and Monipere, who cave trouble at tho start, while Knockfin lost a good deal of ground by missing the jump-out. When the field had travelled three furlongs Wino and Rebel Chief showed out just m front of' Metal Bird, Dollar Bill, Knockfin and Cottcsmpre. Knockfin continued her run rounding the home turn and was almost on terms with Wino entering the straight, with Dollar Bill, Rebel Chief, Cottesmore and Metal Bird next. Knockfin made a game effort to head Wino, but tho latter was always a winner, and he had two lengths to spare at the post. Metal Bird made a renewed effort in tho concluding stages, and got up to gain third money, a neck away from Knockfin. Gay Crest was next, in front of Courtyard, Rebol Chief, Tuirau, Monipero, Sea Fox and Land Raid, two of the last to finish being Golden Hair and Travenna. McHeath's Comfortable Win Star Raider was a good favourite in the Kennels Hack Handicap, but although he put up a good fight, he had no chance of beating McHeatli, who staved on better than previously. Riptide "set a fast pace from the outset, and with half tho journey covered was joined in front by Latitude, the pair carrying on round the top and home turns from McHeath, Sky Rover, Star Raider and Madam Pompadour. Riptide was done with insido the distance, and McHeath drew to tho front, with Star Raider and Madam Pompadour closing up. McHeath had only to bo kept up to his work to beat Star Raider, who was under pressure over the last furlong. Madam Pompadour was a fair third, finishing on, and was followed by Riptide and Sky Rover. Golden Arrow acted as pacemaker for threo parts of tho journey in the Kirwee Trot from Royal Palm, Sonoma King, Buddy, Zest and Red Flush. .The leader retired at the distance and Royal Palm looked to have tho race in hand until Red Flush camo with a solid run to got up to beat him by a length. Colonel Bogey finished fast into third place, two lengths away, in front of Buddy, with Triremo and Zest at the head of tho remainder.
