DEBATING CONTESTS
THE ATHENAEUM CUP INTEREST IN DEBATES One round of the Athenaeum Cup debating competition for the 1935 season has been completed and the second round is now in progress. The contests are held under the auspices of the Auckland Literary and Debating Societies Union and it is expected that they will be brought to a close by the end of October, there being four rounds to be decided yet. Considerable interest is being taken in the debates, 11 teams having been entered. They are Junior Chamber of Commerce (2), Training College (2), Y.M.C.A., Workers' Educational Association, People's University, St. John's College, Auckland University College, Forensic Club and Tainariki Club. The University College team defeated a Junior Chamber of Commerce team in a contest on Friday evening. Mr. J. W. Shaw was adjudicator, the subject being "That Modern Art is Degenerate." The teams were: —University College (negative) : Misses E. M. Johnston and K. M. Harvey and Mr. C. Wrigley. Junior Chamber of Commerce (affirmative): B. H. Kingston, A. Clark and J. Jeflerv. Mr. Shaw gave his decision in favour of the University team by 263 points to 251.
