MAJOH ANNIE GOBDON TRIBUTES ON RETIREMENT POLICE COURT APPRECIATION Tribute to the services of Major .Annie Gordon, of the Salvation Army, •who has retired after 25 years of Police Court and social work in Auckland, was paid yesterday on behalf of the magistrates, the legal profession and uniform and detective branches of the Police Force before the sitting of the Magistrate's Court commenced. "Before the Court commences I must, refer to the retirement to-day of Major Gordon, the female probation officer, and to say how grateful we are for the fine work she has done," said Mr. TftK, McKean, S.M., -with whom was associated Mr. F. K-. Hunt, S.M. " Both Mr. Hunt and I have been associated with Major Gordon for 15 years," added Mr. MrKean. " She has been remarkably successful in her woik. In fact, Auckland has been extremely fortunate in its probation officers, for in Mr. Campbell" we have another good officer." Mr. McKean added that magistrates had to rely on the reports of probation officers to a large extent and in this respect Major Gordon had been of the utmost assistance. She bad also been most helpful in matters outside her set duties and he was glad that the public appreciated her services. " 1 feel sure that Major Gordon's greatest happiness has been the knowledge that her efforts on behalf of unfortunate people have been successful and have boon appreciated by those whom she has been able to help," added Mr. McKean. On behalf of the legal profession, Mr. F. W. Schramm said the type -of work Major Gordon had carried out was most difficult, but she had always done it in a kindly way. Her deep senße of Christian charity prompted her to go beyond her actual duties. "If we were to cofnpile a. list of Major Gordon's good deeds it would take a week to peruse: them," said SubInspector Fox, whose remarks were endorsed by Senior-Detective Hall. In returning thanks, Major Gordon said her work had always been a joy to her.
