FIFTY YEARS AGO
DOMAIN TROUT HATCHERY An interesting article dealing with a trout hatchery in the Domain half, a century ago, appeared in the New Zealand Herald of July 21, 1885. " A large number of young trout are now being distributed from the hatching grounds in, the ponds at the Domain," it stated. " A scarcity of water is being experienced, but the supply will shortly -be increased by a pipe from the city water supply. His Worship the Mayor, taking into consideration that the children who assemble at the Domain on holidays frequently suffer from scarcity of water, has directed that a pipe should be conveyed to the tea-tree grove, and from thence an auxiliary supply can be led to the fish ponds. "It is believed that the trout now being distributed will be able to establish themselves. Hitherto only very young fish were sent out, and they failed, but now they are not liberated until they are six months old. Numbers have been sent to the streams in the Raglan and Kawhia districts."
