July 14 Attempts to salvage the stranded steamer Maheno at Fraser Island have been abandoned. The vessel is waterlogged and heeling over to starboard and there is a large hole in her side through which water is rushing. She is also deeply embedded in sand. It is now reported that the Maheno, which drifted on to the island in a cyclone when en route to Japan in tow of the Oonah, has not broken her back as was feared, but it is believed that it will not be long before her back will be broken, as the result of the heavy pounding of the sea. It is stated that the Union Steam Ship Company sold the Maheno to Japanese shipbreakers for £11,750, Aust: alian currency, but, with other expenses since incurred, the total loss will be about £17,000, which is not covered by insurance. The Oonah will pick up the Maheno's crew. _____ STEAMER KAITOKE SOLD JAPANESE SHIPBREAKERS CREW COMING BY AORANGI (Received July 14, 6.35 p.m.) SYDNEY. July 14 ! Thirty-two Japanese arrived in Sydney by the Atsuta Maru and will leave by the Aorangi on Thursday for Auckland to take away another Union steamer, the Kaitoke, which is to be sent to shipbreakers in Japan. The Kaitoke at present is being refitted for the voyage to Japan at the' Western viaduct, Auckland.
