BOY MISSING

ANXIETY FOR SAFETY WENT TO GATHER FIREWOOD FALL IN HARBOUR FEARED Fears are hold that Michael Carter aged 13, son of Mr. G. Carter, of 114 Calliope Road, Devonport, fell i n t 0 the harbour while collecting firewood on Saturday and was drowned. Following his usual practice on Saturday morning, the lad left home at about 7 o'clock to gather firewood on the foreshore, taking with him a sugar sack and a box. He usually made his way along Calliope Road and then through a vacant section down to the beach. The boy did not return home and in the afternoon a search was instituted. At 10 p.m. a sack containing some firewood was found on the Calliope Wharf on the Stanley Bav side. It is believed to be the sack the boy had, and as the box he took with him was found near by it is presumed that he tripped on the wharf and fell into the harbour. Searches carried out at the weekend by Constables Mallabond, O'Carroll and Butler failed to reveal an v trace of the boy. The lad is described as being sft, .3in. in height, and of sturdy build. He has brown hair, blue eyes and fair complexion with freckles. When he left home he was wearing dark trousers, two old blue jerseys, an old brown raincoat and a rain hat. He was barefooted.
