COMMENTS ON FORM STEEPLECHASE MISHAPS BAZAINE'S RUNAWAY WIN [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] Wellington; Saturday The going at Levin to-day was very soft and treacherous on top, and it completely beat several well-fancied runners, who may soon make amends. Happy Hunting began well in tho Maiden Race and won practically all tho way, giving W. J. Broughton his lirst winning ride sinco his return to the saddle. Tho winner's seasoned condition stood to her. Garter Red and Earl Colossus were both finishing better.

With Transact out of tho steeplechase, Diamond started at a good price, as there was good support for Invictus and Cardial. Diamond led all the way, apart from the first fence. Cardhu took him on over the last circuit, but fell five furlongs from home, leaving him with an unassailable lead. Hunting Boy ran on for second, with Swift Hay third. Invictus ran off at tho second fence, and Gallivanter and Export fell. Dollar Bill just won tho hack sprint in a hard finish. He began well, but when they settled down he dropped in behind Golden Chest, Bodyline and Unseen. Whetuma made a fast run on the outer and was in charge entering the straight, but Dollar Bill, hard ridden, wore him down. Dollar Bill then had to contend with a lightning run by Midacro, and won narrowly. Bodyline was a moderate fourth. The winner put up a good performance, as he was always wide of the rails, having drawn No. 7 position, but he was very judiciously handled by Atkins. The favourites failed completely in tho open seven furlongs, Cottesmore being last to finish, while Orapai and Hunting Lodge were also in the ruck. The going enabled the light-weights to sot too severe a pace. Hunting Lodge led early, but was displaced at the half by Miss Hushabye who showed the way into tho straight and looked a winner until Gold Curo put in a claim. Gold (hire ran on to score decisively, while Miss Hushabye weakened and only just boat Car fox lor second. Hunting Lodge was fourth, followed by Cawbeen and Orapai. Tho Grand Hack Cup saw a desperato finish between Arctic King and Manawatu, the former just squeezing home. Arctic King was whipping-in the field in the early stages, tho pace being made by Kurapao and Hunting Bag. Kurapae shot away by himself passing the seven furlongs, but they were after him again at tho five, where Roipar and Arctic King had run up to the front. These two led round the turn and into tho straight from Manawatu and from that stage nothing else had a chance. Manawatu gradually gained on Arctic King, but at tho post the latter just hung on Roipar was a good third, but the rest were well beaten. The favourite Round Seoro ran a poor race, being unable to show any form at all in the going. Arctic King moved over on to Roipar in the straight and caused interference, and his rider L. 11. .Tones was suspended for 14 days. Lord Moutoa mado amends for the defeat of Manawatu by scoring decisively in the hack seven. Pukeko made the early pace, but Lord Moutoa and Gay Boy moved up to him on tho turn into tho straight. Lord Moutoa then drew away and Gay Boy just hung on to beat Wiietuina for second. Lord .Moutoa is an improved hack. Pukeko ivill he benefited by the race. Tho last raco saw a runaway win by Bazaino. She began well and soon opened up a big break on her opponents, who were headed by Grand Score, Al' Spirit and Abbey Feale. Tho further they went the greater certainty Bazainc became, and she won by ten or twelve lengths from Grand Score, who drew .>ut from tho others, All Spirit and Un seen being next. The winner has always been speedy, but has not shown much stamina Grand Score ran a good race, upon which he should improve, and All Spirit put up a creditable effort. Unseen pulled up lame in front and Abbey Foalo's rider lost an iron which reduced her chances.
