NOTES ON THE RACING

WIN FOR CArTAIN BOLT DEFEAT OF CHANCELLOR ROCKELLA SCORES NICELY BY ARCHER Beginning in good style from the limit, Captain Bolt scored an all-the-way win in the Royal Handicap, for which ho was second fancy each way to Worthy Nor. Captain Belt was always trotting smoothly in the lead a id went on soundly at the finish. Nelson's Glery trotted one of her ' est races and may have seriously troubled the winner only for breaking and losing several longths about two furlongs from home. She is on the improve and may do a lot bettor on top of tho ground. The favourite, Worthy Nor, ran into a good position early and was trotting attractively until she broko, and effectually settled her chance about three furlongs from homo. Native Princess and Meadow King also affected their chances by breaking in tho first round. Audo Patch was in a liandy position three furlongs from homo, but failed to stay on at tho end. The winner is a full-brother to Great Way, who performed well in the South Island when trained by C. S. Donald.

Nelson Luvan In Form After registering a number of minor placings, Nolson Luvan scored his first success when ho won the Manukau Handicap, for which Our McKinney was favourite on both machines. Nelson Luvan was in front all tho way, but he was very tired at the finish and practically walked past the post. Great Chum made an effort to overtake him in the straight, but he was also distressed at the end and could not get up. Nelson Luvan has raced fairly consistently, but has lacked real stamina, although with age he is staying on a littlo better. Ho is owned by Dr. M. G. Pezaro, a committeeman of tho Auckland Trotting Club. Ranfurly Lass looked as if she might win about two furlongs from home, but she failed to stay on in tho straight. Our McKinney never flattered the hopes of his supporters, always being well back. Worthy Boy and Kia Kaha were all at sea in the heavy going and were hopelessly beaten. Showing marked improvement upon her first day's running, Manoeuvre brought off a surprise in the C. F. Mark Memorial, narrowly defeating tho eachway favourite, Chancellor. Manoeuvre paced smoothly throughout in the heavy going and was rcsponsiblo for most of tho running. It appeared as if Chancellor might beat her when he challenged in the straight. He seemed to get his head in front about 50vds. from the post, but ho tired in tho last few strides, where Manoeuvre came again. Chancellor was a shade unlucky, as he was hemmed in on the rails until reaching tho straight, and lost a little ground at a critical stage. Great Logan Checked Lady Coronado ran a solid raco, again demonstrating her ability to pace well in heavy going. Auto Machine made a respectable showing. Nimbus displayed- a bold front up on the outside of Manoeuvre until reaching the straight and then retired quickly. Smooger went well until ho broke a bouttwo furlongs from homo and interfered with Great Logan, who was handy enough to hare had a chance. The winner is by Man o' War and, like her sire, is evidently partial to heavy going. Great Admiral was supported down to a short price on both machines for the Members' Handicap, and ho justified tho confidence reposed in him by winning handsomely. Great Admiral went away well to make the running over the first half-mile, when he surrendered the lead to Ann Parrish, who had run up very smartly after a bad beginning. Great Admiral then trailed Ann Parrish until about two furlongs from home, when he again assumed the lead, to score with a little in hand. Nelson Pirate trotted one of his best races for second and Muto also displayed some dash, although he made more than one mistake during tho running and lost a good deal of ground early. Kuini also failed to trot solidly and was well beaten. Great Admiral is an improving trotter by Nelson Bingen from Great Eyre, and ho will reach higher company next season. Ann Parrish was made so much use of after her slow beginning that it was not surprising that she stopped at the finish.

A Decisive Victory Favoured with a fino run on tho rails throughout, JRockclla scored very decisively in tlio .Tune Handicap, for which Bismuth and Bonny Azure were tho favourites Rockella was not too well placed after the field had covered a couplo of furlongs, but lie was in front about five furlongs from home and was not afterwards headed. Toward tho end ho was drawing away from the field, and he is nn improver who should prove very useful in the new season. Bonny Azure did well to get second after making a bad beginning, and it looked as if she would have taken a lot of beating if she had gone away correctly. Bonnie Azure is an attractive filly, who should see a better clay. Kewpie's Crest paced a sound race for third. Our McKinncv was never really dangerous, but was staying on at tho end, after being under pressure a good way from home. Ironside failed to reproduce his first day's form, and Lucky Love tired in the straight, alter showing a lot of dash for about a mile anxt'a-quarter. . The backmarker Kewpie's Triumph 'scored a well-deserved victory in tho Prince of .Wales Handicap, comfortably defeating the each-way favourite, Prince Pedro. Kewpie's Triumph began well to be just behind the leaders before going half tho journey. Ho assumed command about three furlongs from home and always had the measure of the opposition after that, although Princo Pedro made a determined effort to overhaul him after reaching the straight. Princo Pedro had every chance, and, only for Smooger tangling at tho finish; ho may have been beaten for second. Smooger hampered his chance by a slow beginning, and also by his lapso near the finish, although lie did not look like reaching Kewpie's Triumph. The placed horses came away from the rest of the field, and 'thev were the only onesi with chances in tho last few furlongs. Lady Coronado did best of the others, and Wee .Machine paced solidly after losing ground early. King's Warrior Wins Well The win favourite King's Warrior scored convincingly in the Liverpool Handicap. King's Warrior was unlucky when beaten into third place in tho Marconi Handicap 011 tho first day, but on this occasion he had a fine run and gave nothing a chance at tho finish. He trailed Lady Amanda for most of the journey and. reaching tho front about three furlongs from home, ho went on very resolutely when C. G. Smith asked him for a final effort in the straight. Lady Amanda paced 011 c of her best races. She loft the mark very smartly and had a nice lead early. Over tho last couple of furlongs she could not go with King's Warrior, but sho stayed on well enough to narrowly beat Bonnie Direct for second. Bonnie Direct made a very creditablo showing, and so did Kewpie's King. It appeared as if Kewpie's King would bo in a plaeo rounding tho home turn, but lie faded at. the end. evidently being a trifle short of work after his recbiit soreness.
