ORAKEI MAORI SETTLEMENT
Sir, —I heartily endorse the viewi v |ii expressed by "Orakei Resident" with j regard to the proposed .Maori settle- ! ment at Orakei. As one (of the pur- | chasers at the original auction tale I strongly protest against such proposal on the ground that i the purchasers were definitely promised by the Government that the Orakoi subjrl) | was to be a model European suburb, and the purchasers accordingly paid a!?!; fancy price for their sections. I feel sure that no purchaser in his or ber '£ wildest dreams contemplated the establishment of a glorified Maori pa ul. Ij jacent thereto merely for the amuse- fi ment of casual sightseers. I consider it the duty of the Government to resist the City Council's proposal to the last ditch, and in so doing believe it would be furthering the interests, not only of | the section holders, but also of the *s! natives, who are running the risk of becoming glorified showmen instead of worthy representatives of a noble race. Section Holder.
