OBITUARY
MR. G. A. MAXWELL POLITICIAN AND BARRISTER (Received June 25. 7.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE. June 25 The death occurred to-day of Mr. George Arnot Maxwell, member of the House of Representatives for Fawkner, also a leader at the Victorian criminal Bar. The late Mr. Maxwell had represented Fawkner in the Federal Parliament since 1917, when he defeated the sitting Labour member, Mr. Joseph Hannan, by a large majority. In 1929, when the Bruce-Page Government brought down a. bill radically to amend the industrial arbitration system, Mr. Maxwell told his leader frankly that he could not support the proposed changer With Mr. Hughes and Mr. Marks lie withdrew his support from the Government, which was defeated and went to the country.* Mr. Maxwell stood for Fawkner at the next election as an Independent Nationalist and defeated Sir Arthur Robinson, the official endorsed candidate, by a sweeping majority. He carried out his political duties with enthusiasm and energy. He was a friend of the people and pledged himself to support with all his strength any move that would provide work for the workless. mr. John McMillan (Received June 25, 5.5 p.m.) MOXTRF.AL, June 24 The death is announced of Mr. John McMillan, aged G9, formerly general manager of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
