SCOTTISH BALLADS The monthly At Home of the St. Andrew's Society's Ladies' Auxiliary was held in the Fabian Club rooms yesterday afternoon. The president, Mrs. J. K. Black, presided, and extended a, welcome to the members and visitors. A costume-lecture recital on the stories and poems of Scotland was given by Mrs. Helen Griffiths. The speaker, who was dressed in national costume, took her audience in imagination through the Highlands of Scotland, and dealt with its old traditions and legends, giving many beautiful extracts from the works of Scott, Burns, Barrie and others. Tho beauty and simplicity of tho Scottish words and songs was pointed out by Mrs. Griffiths, who gave as an example the Wavorlcy novels, which, she said, were outstanding for their beauty and purcness of dialect. Tho address was illustrated by the singing of several well-known Scottish songs and ballads by Airs, do Berg, Mrs. H. Armstrong Koven and Mrs. A. Wyness. In recognition of having been made a justice of the peace a presentation of a bouquet was made to Mrs. Black by Mrs. D. McLaren, on behalf of the members.
