THE WEEKLY NEWS

TO-DAiY'S PUBLICATION FINE PICTORIAL SECTION SOCIAL EVENTS ILLUSTRATED The main pictorial section of this week's issue of The Weekly News, which is on sale to-day, contains many topics of wide and varied interest. The revival of the timber industry in Vi estland forms the subject of the central double-page feature, all phases of the industry being illustrated. Last week's floods in Otago and Southland are featured on the frontispiece, while prominence is also given to the official opening of the new Baring Head lighthouse, Wellington. A full page is devoted to photographs of the fancy dress costumes at the annual arts ball in Auckland, while portraits of debutantes presented at prominent dances in Auckland, Christchurch and Hamilton are reproduced on other pages. Celebrations to mark the 70th anniversary of tho Okato district, near New Plymouth, provide an interesting series of pictures, while other illustrations are of the earthquake disaster at Quetta, final of the British amateur golf championship, prize-winning entries in the recent Weekly News photographic competition, the Palmerston North jubilee show and the first hockey test match between India and New Zealand. An item of special interest in the letterpress section is an illustrated article dealing with the rivalry which has existed among the maritime nations for the coveted "Blue Riband of the Atlantic." Included is a valuable summary of record Atlantic crossings. The series of articles by Sir James Jeans is continued with a description of the wonders of the moon. This week's crime mystery is written by Freeman Wills Crofts, well-known author of detective fiction. Articles of special value in the farming section include a discussion of the possible effects on the health of stock from the excessive stimulation of pastures with artificial manures, and advice on important farm works requiring attention next month.
