LAST MONTH'S RETURNS IMPORTS UP 45 PER CENT EXPORTS SHOW DECREASE Imports from overseas passing through the port of Auckland last month increased by 45 per cent, compared with the tonnage for May, 1934, reported the traffic manager, Mr. W. R. Golden, at yesterday's meeting of the Harbour Board. Exports, on the other hand, decreased by over 18 per cent. The total amount of cargo handled during the month was 133,086 tons, an increase of 16.53 per cent. Inward coastal cargo in May amounted to 38,752 tons, an increase of 4.47 per cent; inward overseas to 53,391 tons, an increase of 16,603 tons; transhipments, 4200 tons, a decrease of 11.41 per cent; outward coastal, 20,891 tons, an increase of 29.91 per cent; outward overseas, 15,852 tons, a decrease of 3652 tons. Compared with April last inward and outward cargo decreased by 23,282 tons. In exports overseas the principal increases were in general cargo (700 tons) and in softwood timber (247 tons). The chief decreases occurred in cheese (878 tons), wool, skins and pelts (798 tons), fresh fruits (701 tons), frozen and preserved meats, bacon and hams (.686 tons), tallow (630 tons), butter (550 tons), and milk products other than butter and cheese (390 tons). The principal increases in inward overseas cargo were manures (14,119 tons), raw sugar (7696 tons), general (5499 tons), and hardwood timber (672 tons). Decreases occurred in motor spirit, fuel oil, etc. (10,818 tons), salt (535 tons), and coal and coke (473 tons).
