MEAT PROBLEM
ULTIMATE SOLUTION TARIFFS TO BE UTILISED OFFICIAL DECLARATION By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received June 21. 7.15 p.m.) LONDON. June 20 Although the debate on the Dominions Office vote in the House of Commons was regarded as important, barely 80 members were present when Mr. Thomas rose to speak. There were only six Labour members in that total.
It was most apparent that the House was only mildly interested in the affairs of the Dominions. Mr. W. Lunn (Labour —Roth well, Yorkshire) moved a reduction of the vote. He said Labour was willing to co-operate in the development of the Empire as long as it was for the welfare of the peoples, not for the enrichment of individuals. Migration at present offered no opportunities. Mr. Thomas' use of the word "tariff" was keenly discussed in the lobbies. Members asked the Government to clear up the position. Consequently Lord Stanley, Parliamentary Secretary for the Dominions, in the course of the debate said: "We intend to deal with this new meat situation by means of tariffs. We intend the ultimate solution to be one of tariffs, but an interim settlement is now a matter of negotiation." At this stage the debate was adjourned.
