MISHAP WITH ANCHOR

HELD BY MOVABLE OBJECT INCIDENT ON EAST COAST [by telegraph OWN correspondent] GISBORNE, Friday An unusual incident occurred when the Gisborne Stevedoring and Lightering Company's Karoro tried to lift its starboard anchor at Tokomaru Bay a few days ago. It was impossible to raise the anchor, which, however, could be towed along the sea bed. The Karoro had stood off the Tokomaru Bay wharf overnight during lightering work on the Piako and when an attempt was made to raise the anchor in the morning all efforts were fruitless. The anchor was dragged some distance, but eventually the cable was slipped, and the spot was buoyed, so that a further attempt could be made on the Karoro's next visit to Tokomaru Bay, probably about the end. of next month, when additional gear will be taken.

It is thought that the anchor has fouled some movable object on the sea bottom, possibly a ship's largo anchor.
