ACCOUNTANCY SYLLABUS

STUDY OF ECONOMICS "That the subject of economics be dropped from the society's syllabus of examination and that the subject of secretarial law and practice be added in lieu thereof," was a recommendation of the education committee which caused much discussion at a recent meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Society of Accountants. Mr. A. M. Seaman (Auckland) said that there had been a certain amount of hesitation on tho part of the committee in making tho recommendation. Personally, he was in favour of retaining economics for the professional examination, but consideration had to be given to certain complaints about the scope of papers and the class of papers set. A definite demand had been indicated at the Accountants' Convention in Auckland for extra work (connected with accountancy) not now included in the syllabus. Mr. H. Valentine (Wellington) said he believed that it would be a retrograde step to eliminate economics from the syllabus, for economics should be the basic science of accountancy. The president, Mr. P. B. Foote, said he was satisfied that tho proper place for economics was in the Bachelor of Commerce course. The council resolved that economics should be retained for tho professional course, and that the standard should bo stage 1 of the B.A. examinations in that subject. Tho new prescription would not come into forco until 1935.
