BAILIFF ASSAULTED
COMPANION ALSO STRUCK * . AN OLD MAN CONVICTED [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Friday On the information of Arthur Garner, a bailiff, Alfred Shadbolt was today convicted of assault and ordered to come up for sentence within 12 months if called upon. Counsel for the bailiff said defendant was a very old man. There was substantial arrears of rent and the landlord asked him to vacate the premises. He was given ample time to leave and the assault took place after the bailiff had called several times. At the time of the assault the bailiff and a companion had called to see if the premises had been vacated and Shadbolt came to the door and abused them. He also struck the bailiff in the face, breaking his glasses and cutting an eye, and also jtruck his companion. Neither had retaliated, and the case was brought with a view to warning Shadbolt that he could not behave in such a manner.
Shadbolt was ordered to pay 17s Gd for the. broken glasses.
