BUILDING SCHEMES
SCHOOLS AND DWELLINGS
DENIAL BY THE MINISTER
[by telegraph—Pit ESS association] HASTINGS. Friday
An announcement that before long there was a prospect of a national scheme for remodelling and constructing schools, as well as for a major house building project in the main centres of the Dominion, was made by Mr. G. Maddison, chairman of the Ilawke's Bay Education Board, at its monthly meeting to-day. Mr. Maddison said that from what he heard in Wellington there was every reason to believe that there would be considerable expenditure for school construction and reconstruction. Further, the Government would probably be embarking upon a major scheme of house building similar to that in England. Members expressed approval of the suggested scheme.
The chairman of the Auckland Education Board, Mr. T. U. Wells, said last night that no suggestion of the proposals disclosed by Mr. Maddison had come beforo his board. Tho Minister of Education, the Hon. S. G. Smith, who is also Minister of Employment, was interviewed in Wellington by telephone, and disclaimed all knowledge of the matter. He added that the proposals which Mr. Maddison seemed to regard as definite had not even come under his notice.
