CIVIC SALARIES
PAYMENTS IN SYDNEY PROPOSED INCREASES The question of substantially increasing the salaries of senior officers of the Sydney City Council is being discussed. An award covering the salaried officers group came into operation in April this year. This award restored partly, and in somo cases wholly, tho salaries which had been reduced in depression years. The salaries of certain senior officers outside tho scope of tho award were, however, not affected, and it is now considered that insufficient margins exist between these and their immediate branch or departmental heads to whom the award applies. The Lord Mayor, Sir Alfred Parker, it was understood, will recommend increasing tho salaries of certain of the officers. It was stated that the salaries paid to tho town clork and heads of the various services are lower than thoso received by officers in similar positions in Melbourne and Brisbane. It was proposed that tho salary of tho town clerk, Mr. Hoy Hendy, bo increased from £1650 to £2OOO a year; that of the deputy town clerk, Mr. F. J. Smith, from £BSO to £1200; tho city treasurer, Mr. A. A. Brackpool, from £9OO to £1250, and the city engineer, Mr. Garnsey, from £1350 to £ISOO. Increases to other officers, such as tho examiner of accounts, the chief accountant, chief engineering assistant, and city valuer, may also be considered.
