NOTED ENGINEER DEAD
MR. WILLIAM FERGUSON LONG RECORD OF SERVICE [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION^ WELLINGTON, Thursday The death occurred this morning of Mr. William Ferguson, whose notable record of community service lias passed into Wellington's history. He was a gifted engineer, who probably did more than anyone to make the port of Wellington one of the best equipped south of the line. Born in London in 1852, Mr. Ferguson came to Now Zealand in 1883 and in the succeeding ye.ar was appointed engineer and secretary to the Wellington Harbour Board, a position that lie held until his retirement in 1908. He held the position of managing director of the Wellington Gas Company from 1908 to 1916, when he was appointed chairman of the National Efficiency Board, a post that he retained for four years. Mr. Ferguson was a foundationmember of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers and was president of that body in 1919-20.
