FATAL FOREST FIRE
OFFICER BURNED TO DEATH CAUSED BY CIGARETTE BUTT (R-eceived June 9, 7.15 p.m.) CALCUTTA. June 8 A message from Simla states that the dropping of a cigarette end near the research institute at Kasauli, an important military hill station, caused a great forest fire that threatened to destrov the cantonments.
The local troops, reinforced by companies from a neighbouring station, fought the flames for 24* hours by cu> ting down trees and thus narrowly saving the town of Sabathu. Captain Lane, of the Cheshire Regiment, was burned to death in the course of the fight against the flames. One officer and two men were seriously burned.
