BETTING AT RACES

DECREASE FOR SEASON TOTALISATOR RETURNS CLUBS IN METROPOLITAN AREA A decrease of £20,459 was recorded in the totalisator turnover for the 20 days of racing in the Auckland metropolitan area for the season just concluded, compared with the 1933-34 season. Investments totalled £601,344 10s, the previous season's figures being £621,803 10s Decreases were registered at every meeting with the exception of the Auckland Racing Club's spring meeting, when there was an increase of £10,548, and the Takapuna Jockey Club's two meetings, both of which were held at Kllerslie instead of at the Takapuna course, as in the previous season. The largest decreases were at the Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting, when the turnover was £11,611 lower, and the Avondale Jockey 1 Club's winter meeting, which showed a decrease of £10,477 10s. Meetings at which increases were shown were generally favoured with fine weather as against wet weather the previous season, and the heaviest decreases were traceable to unfavourable weather. The win and place system of betting was used at only three meetings, two of which showed increases in betting and one a decrease. The general experience of the season showed a downward trend, except in altered or unusually favourable circumstances.

The Auckland Racing Club, with 11 days' racing at Ellerslie, accounted for more than two-thirds of the turnover, with investments totalling £419,241, a decrease of £6655. The largest decrease was shown by the Avondale Jockey Club, the total for four days' racing, £66,597 10s, being £18,925 10s lower than the previous season. The Takapuna Jockey Club was the only one to show an increase, the total of £98,089 being £9221 10s higher than last season. There was a decrease of £4IOO at the Pakuranga Hunt's meeting.
