FOUR PUBLIC BEQUESTS MR. W. HANDYSIDE'S WILL [BY TELEGRAPH KRESS ASSOCIATION] DUNEDIN, Saturday The will of the late Mr. William Handyside, of Invercargill, has been sworn for probate at £90,000. Bequests of £SOO each were left to the Nightcaps Presbyterian Church choir fund, St. John's Church, Invercargill, Dr. Barnardo's Home, London, and the New Zealand branch of the Cancer Research Fund.
The late Mr. Handyside, who died on May 21 at the age of 87, was a native of Scotland. He had long been a prominent figure in the business life of Invercargill. Wjth the late Sir John Roberts he started the Nightcaps coal mine, in Southland, about 1882, and for 2-5 years he acted as manager of the company. Then, for a further 18 years, he was managing-director, until the company ceased operations owing to the coal working out in 1925. Mr. Handysido is reported to have made many anonymous donations to charitable institutions and other bodies. The statues of Earl Jellicoe, Earl Kitchener and Sir Joseph Ward, in the Post Office Square at Invercargill, were gifts of his. With characteristic modesty he would permit no public reference to these gifts during his lifetime.
