FORTY ARRESTS MADE
ALLEGED GAMING HOUSE CHINESE PREMISES RAIDED [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday The police raided a house in Madras Street, Chiistchurch, shortly after eight o'clock this evening. More than 40 Chinese were arrested and taken by relays to the central police station. The raid was carried out by two detectives and two uniformed constables. When entrance was effected the Chinese gave the police no trouble and all who were found in the house were arrested. Some of the Chinese tried to arrange bail, naming other Chinese in the city as sureties. Not all of them were successful, however, and many of those arrested will spend the night in the cells. The house is described as a Chinese boarding house. It is next to a vacant section, and those inside would have had great difficulty in escaping unseen. It will be alleged by the police that the house was a resort for Chinese who played pakapoo and fantan.
